Website Tour: For Multilingual Students

Last updated 6/14/2016

Visual: Video opens to a blank notebook with the Walden University and Writing Center logo. The words “Walden University Writing Center” and “Your writing, grammar, and APA experts” appears. The screen then fades to the video’s title slide with the playlist name “Website Tour” and the Walden University and Writing Center logo. The video title “For Multilingual Students” fades in.

The screen changes to the For Multilingual Students page on the Writing Center website with the following menu:

Academic Writing and Support at Walden

Global Student Page

Audio: Hello, and welcome to the For Multilingual Students section of the Walden Writing Center website.  We have many multilingual students at Walden, those who have learned English as children, young people, or as adults, including both domestic and international students.  This page was created by writing center staff to highlight academic writing expectations at Walden and resources that may be especially helpful for our multilingual students.

Visual: The website’s menu is highlighted, and as the speaker talks about each section, that section is highlighted.

Audio: There are three main content pages in the For Multilingual Students section of the website where we highlight information about U.S. Academic Writing, Academic Writing and Support at Walden, and English Language resources.  I’ll give a little more information about each of them.

Visual: The “U.S. Academic Writing” link is highlighted, clicked, and opened. This page includes the heading “Academic Writing Norms in the United States” and general information about U.S. academic writing norms and links to other resources about U.S. academic writing norms.

Audio: In U.S. Academic Writing, you will find information about the norms and expectations for academic writing at a U.S. university.  Because norms for academic writing vary from other types of writing, such as business writing or creative writing, as well as academic writing in different countries, it is important to become familiar with the norms and expectations in the U.S. academic context.  This page includes links to information about expectations, scholarly voice, organization of ideas, and creating strong academic arguments.

Visual: The screen goes back to the main For Multilingual Students page. The “Academic Writing and Support at Walden” link is highlighted, clicked, and opened. This page includes information about discussion posts, papers, revision and proofreading strategies and tools, paper review service, and writing courses for nonnative speakers.

Audio: In Academic Writing and Support at Walden, you will find information about typical writing assignments at Walden as well as resources available for Walden students, such as Paper Review appointments with professional writing instructors.  Read through this page for tips on effectively writing and revising discussion posts and papers.

Visual: The screen goes back to the main For Multilingual Students page. The “English Language” link is highlighted, clicked, and opened. This page includes information about grammar, punctuation, and common writing terms.

Audio: On the English Language page, you can find links to various grammar and punctuation resources that you can view at any time, including web pages, modules, and webinars. Learning a language takes a long time, and becoming an expert at the academic use of a language will take even longer.  We created some language and grammar resources to support Walden students through this learning process.

Visual: The screen goes back to the main For Multilingual Students page. The “Global Students Page” link is highlighted, clicked, and opened. This page includes a link to Walden University’s Global Student Page.

Audio: Finally, there is a link to the Global Students page, which includes information from other support centers at Walden including Student Success Advising, the Academic Skills Center, the Bookstore, Career Services, and the Library about successfully navigating through your Walden degree program.
