DHA Doctoral Study Resources

If you started your prospectus in Summer 2020 or after, use the instructions and Prospectus form located on the DHA Doctoral Study page on the Center for Research Quality website.

If you started your prospectus before Summer 2020 use this prospectus template:

The following template is only for students who have consulted with their faculty committees and have approval to finish a study in APA 6 by December 31, 2020.

  • DHA Doctoral Study Template (APA 6)
This template is for students finishing doctoral capstone studies by December 31, 2020, and who have decided to continue with APA 6 as a style guide with faculty approval.

To prepare for the form and style review, use the following checklist, which is the same checklist we use when we review capstone manuscripts and the checklist we return to the student and committee along with the completed form and style review.

Form and Style Review Checklist (APA 6)
This checklist is for students finishing doctoral capstone studies by December 31, 2020, and who have decided to continue with APA 6 as a style guide with faculty approval.

APA 7 Doctoral Capstone Templates Now Available

APA 7 templates are now available for all doctoral capstones. If you have already been writing in an APA 6 template, please see the Grace Period update on the APA 7 Transition page to learn whether you have the option to continue using APA 6 format as you complete your capstone document.

If you would like to update an existing capstone document created with the APA 6 template to meet APA 7 rules, use the cheat sheet below to learn how to adapt the APA 6 template to APA 7. Alternatively, you can cut and paste your text into the new APA 7 template.

Using the Doctoral Capstone Template

Walden editors are currently revising and updating the template instructional video.

Please review the 2019 Capstone Writing Clinic presentation, Using the Capstone Template.

In this video, form and style editors Dr. Joe Gredler, Carey Little Brown, and, Sam Herrington demonstrate and discuss how to use the Walden capstone templates.

The opening and introduction in this recording, about the first 20 minutes, covers

  • introduction to the template document and editing resources,
  • capstone formatting expectations and resources, and
  • where to locate and download the templates.

The second portion of this recording, from about 20 minutes in (until the end), includes a visual demonstration of using the actual template in MS Word, including

  • contents of the template,
  • formatting embedded in the document and how to use it,
    • Including page breaks, section breaks, and the pilcrow,
  • tagging headings and updating the Table of Contents,
  • reference list formatting,
  • editor responses to student questions, and
  • general discussions of best practices for using the template and ensuring Walden and ProQuest formatting requirements are met.

In addition, Walden editors suggest students review the SMRTguides on document formatting and Correcting Common Errors in the Capstone Template Table of Contents.

About the DHA Doctoral Study

A doctoral study is a formal manuscript written on applied public health research. Walden DHA doctoral studies consist of four sections:

  • Section 1: Foundation of the Study and Literature Review,
  • Section 2: Research Design and Data Collection,
  • Section 3: Presentation of the Results and Findings, and
  • Section 4: Application to Professional Practice and Implications for Social Change.

You can access additional information on the Doctor of Public Health doctoral study and process from the Center for Research Quality's Doctoral Capstone and Project Resources. Access samples of published doctoral studies through the Walden library website under Databases.
