How this search works

You’ll find the Library Databases search box on the Library homepage, on many of the OASIS webpages, and at the top of this guide.

This search box searches most (but not all) of the Library’s databases at the same time and includes peer-reviewed journals, books, encyclopedias, handbooks, magazines, newspapers, and videos. You can see the full list of databases that are included below.

Search strategies

Since this search box searches multiple databases, there are some search strategies that can be helpful for finding relevant information quickly and efficiently. For more detailed information on setting up your search, read through the rest of this guide. 

Too many results

  • Use limiters (on the left-side menu on the results page) such as full text, peer review, and publication date. 
  • Search important keywords in the article title or abstract. To do this, on the results page, use the drop-down menu on the right side of each search box. For example, to search for a keyword in the article title, select TI Title in the drop-down menu.
  • Add more concepts to your search. For example, if you're searching for what makes first-generation college students successful, you might add in the term financial aid to narrow your search further.

Too few results 

  • Check your spelling.
  • Make sure you entered one idea or concept per search box. 
  • Add synonyms. ​For example, if you're searching for drug abuse try searching drug abuse or drug addiction or substance abuse. 
  • Remove concepts from your search. For example, if you're searching how financial aid influences the success of first-generation college students, consider removing financial aid and exploring the literature on other factors that influence success.
