Walden University provides Grammarly access to current Walden students, faculty, and staff.

Basics of Grammarly

Grammarly is an automated grammar, proofreading, and writing style tool.

Through Walden’s institutional Grammarly account, users gain access to the following premium features:

  • Enhanced style, tone, and clarity suggestions
  • APA citation support
  • Accidental plagiarism check

Grammarly will provide editing and revision suggestions; it is up to you to thoughtfully incorporate or reject them.

Getting Started

First-time Grammarly users should create an account using your Walden University email address.

Once you have created an account, you can download the Grammarly apps for your desktop, browser, or mobile devices.

Using Grammarly

Grammarly Editor

After creating an account, access the Grammarly Editor in your browser. There, you can upload a draft and utilize all of Grammarly’s features. Keep in mind that this is your writing. Only accept Grammarly’s suggestions if they reflect what you intend to communicate.

Grammarly Editor User Guide

When using the Grammarly Editor, you may notice a numerical performance score out of 100. This score represents the quantity and scope of suggestions from Grammarly, and it may help writers think about the readability of their work. The more you edit and revise, the more your score will increase. This score should not be equated with a grade or rubric score, as it does not take into account aspects of the writing beyond sentence-level clarity and style. Check out Grammarly’s blog post on How to Use Readability Scores in Your Writing for more.

Grammarly Apps

If you prefer to use Grammarly where you write, you can download one of the apps for Windows, Mac, or other devices: Grammarly’s product offerings.

Grammarly and APA

While Grammarly offers suggestions for different writing styles (e.g., academic, casual, and business writing), it may not provide guidance on style consistent with the APA publication manual. If you need to closely follow APA Style for your Walden writing, see the OASIS webpages on APA Guidelines or refer to the APA manual or the APA Style website.

Technical Issues

If you don’t receive a verification code in your email when creating an account, first ensure that you spelled your email address correctly. Specifically, check for the “u” in waldenu.edu. You might also check your email’s spam folder.

If you experience technical issues creating an account or logging into Grammarly, visit Grammarly’s support website.
