Search Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory

To verify if an article is peer reviewed, determine if the journal where the article was published uses a peer review process. Check the peer review status of a journal by searching the journal title (not the article title) in Ulrich's, a database of publisher information.

In the results list, a referee icon (umpire's jersey) next to the journal title indicates the journal uses a peer review process.

Determine the Correct Journal in Ulrich’s

Multiple Journal Entries

Often a journal will be listed more than once in the search results when it’s available in different formats such as online, print, or microform. These entries will all have the same publisher listed.

Journals with the Same Name or Similar Names

Some journals may have the same name or only have a small difference in the title. For instance, The Journal of Economics is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Missouri Valley Economics Association. Journal of Economics is published by Meerut University Economics Association and is not peer reviewed.

Strategies for Identifying the Correct Journal

Try these strategies to gather more information about the journal where your article was published to help identify the correct journal in Ulrich’s.

  1. Double-check the wording and spelling of the journal title on the article PDF.
  2. Check to see if the journal publisher is listed on the article PDF. You might find the publisher’s name or logo on the first page or in the article header or footer.
  3. Gather more information about the article in the Library. Search the article title in the Library Multi-Database Search. In the results list, click the article title to open the detailed record, which may include publisher information as well as the journal’s international standard serial number (ISSN), which can also be used for identifying the correct journal in Ulrich’s.

Verify Peer Review on the Publisher's Website

If the journal you’re looking for is not listed in Ulrich’s or you want to double-check its peer review status, you can check the editorial policies on the publisher's website, which will include their article submission and review process. A simple Google search for the journal will usually locate the journal's website.

Journals that use a peer-review process will commonly list this information in these areas on their website:

  • About us
  • Editorial policies
  • Instructions for authors
  • Submission guidelines
