Evidence-Based Research: Joanna Briggs Institute Search Help

Introduction

JBI EBP

Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) is a research and development center at the University of Adelaide, South Australia. The institute provides a filtered database containing their systematic reviews, evidence summaries, and best practice information sheets.

On this page you will learn how to:

  • limit your JBI search results to systematic reviews
  • limit your JBI search results to evidence summaries
  • find full text in the JBI database

Set up your search

The JBI EBP database is relatively small, so start by trying just one or two words, or a broad concept. It is highly unlikely that you'll find something that addresses ALL the elements of your PICOT question.

Here is an example of how to put together a complex search in Joanna Briggs Institute EBP Database:

  1. On the Library homepage, find the Research by Subject button.

    Research by Subject

  2. Click on Research by Subject and choose: Nursing.
  3. Click on the Nursing Databases section, select All Nursing Databases, and choose JBI EBP Database.

Note: If you have not already logged in to the Library databases, you will be prompted to log in with your myWalden Portal user name and password.

  4. Once you are in the database, you will only have one search box.
Start with a very broad topic or concept word.
    Example: handwashing

Look in the left column for a summary of results:
Search information includes fields searched, terms used, and number of hits.

43 results is not a lot - so browse the first page or so before refining the search, if necessary.

For a search with multiple concepts:

  1. Click on Multi-Field Search above the single search box to see the multiple search box screen.

  2. Enter your keywords. For example, in the first search box, enter: handwashing
  3. In the second search box enter:

    Neonatal OR NICU

Note: You can use OR to link together your synonyms, or related words, in a search box, allowing the database to search more broadly.

  4. Leave the third box blank unless this gives a large hitlist! Only 9 for this example.

Systematic reviews

Once you have set up your search, here is how you can limit your results to only systematic reviews in the JBI EBP Database:

  1. Under the search boxes, click the word Limits to open the limiter menu.
  2. In the Publication Types box, scroll down and select Systematic Reviews by finding it in the list and clicking on it (it will then be highlighted)
JBI database limits for year, systematic review, and infection control

  3. Click on the Search button to run your search.

Zero results? Broaden your concept or remove some limits. Remember that this database is relatively small.

Evidence summaries

Evidence Summaries are a type of Critically-Appraised Topic, a standardized one to two page summary of the evidence supporting a clinical question. They include a critique of the literature and a statement of relevant results.

Follow these steps after you have set up your search to find Evidence Summaries:

  1. Under the search boxes, click the word Limits to open the limiter menu.
  2. In the Publication Types box, scroll down and select Evidence Summaries by finding it in the list and clicking on it (it will then be highlighted).

  3. Click on the Search button to run your search.

Find full text

Once you have run your search, you can access the full text of a document. Click on the JBI Database PDF link to the right of the information about the article on the search results page.
