DPA Residency Timing
Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) Residency Timing
Effective as of September 2024, for students who started Fall 2023 and after, academic residencies are no longer required for DPA program completion and are NOT REQUIRED for degree conferral. Residency objectives will be met within required program courses.
For students who started in Fall 2023 or later:
- if you have completed one or both residencies, the residencies will be marked as "Satisfied" on your academic transcript.
- If you choose to take additional residencies after September 2024 these will be optional and as such not eligible to be included in your financial aid cost of attendance.
For students who started prior to Fall 2023, please refer to timing requirements below:

DPA Residency Learning Outcomes
The following are key learning outcomes you will be expected to achieve as part of your residency experiences at each level:
Residency 1
- Organize a team to work on a public or nonprofit sector problem.
- Identify the salient aspects of a particular public or nonprofit sector problem.
- Synthesize various theoretical frameworks and managerial techniques in order to design solutions to a public or nonprofit sector problem.
- Formulate alternative solutions to a public or nonprofit sector problem.
- Evaluate alternative solutions to a public or nonprofit sector problem.
- Present recommendations regarding the solution of a public or nonprofit sector problem.
- Apply what they learn to their own Professional Administrative Study.
Residency 2
- Develop leadership skills by providing guidance and support to Residency 1 students.
- Identify the salient aspects of a problem, purpose, and research question associated with a successful Professional Administrative Study.
- Apply various theoretical and conceptual frameworks and managerial techniques to the applied Professional Administrative Study.
- Formulate a research design/strategy for the Professional Administrative Study.
- Evaluate alternative solutions for applied research design.
- Demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based practices in the application of a professional consulting study.
- Employ ethical and culturally sensitive research designs in professional consulting reports.
- Demonstrate skill in technical writing appropriate for the Professional Administrative Study.
- Demonstrate best practices in oral presentation skills.
