Evaluating Student Competency

As a student enrolled in field experience courses, you are regularly assessed for counseling skills and professional development to ensure that you are progressing in a developmentally appropriate way. The assessment process includes both formal assessments completed by site supervisors (i.e., Mid-Quarter Evaluation and End-of-Quarter Evaluation of Student) and faculty supervisors (i.e., End-of-Quarter Evaluation of Student) as well as regular, informal assessment of skills and professionalism (e.g., supervision videoconference calls, recordings, live observations, work samples, classroom engagement).

When a faculty member contacts a student regarding the faculty member's evaluation or plan to address knowledge, skills, or professional dispositions, students are required to respond and engage; engagement is a professional disposition that counselors are expected to exercise.

When it is determined that you are demonstrating a skill-based need or a comportment concern during field experience that cannot be remediated by less formal measures, a more formal student support plan (skills and/or disposition) will be instituted to support you.

Progression to future field experience courses or graduation is contingent upon successful completion of the required support plan(s). You will be halted in your progression of field experience until the support plan(s) are completed.

If a skills or disposition plan is assigned due to unsatisfactory evaluation scores, please note that completing the plan does not alter the field experience course grade. A passing grade requires satisfactory evaluations; completing a plan after receiving an unsatisfactory scores does not fulfill this requirement or retroactively change the grade.

The director of field experience reserves the right to remove you from a site or otherwise rescind approval of a site or site supervisor if it is determined that you are unable to meet the program requirements or if personal and/or professional conflicts at the site warrant this action.
