Springshare Standards: Troubleshooting

Can't click on drop-down menus in admin view

If you have a laptop with a touchscreen (as the newer Walden laptops do), you are unable to use the drop-down menus in the LibGuides backend. This is due to the way the browser interacts with the touchscreen.  Springshare kindly sent us the workaround for this issue.

Chrome

  1. Type this in Chrome's address bar: chrome://flags
  2. Do a find (control+F) for: touch
  3. It should call up an option called "Enable touch events".
  4. Change this setting to Disabled.
  5. Restart Chrome.

Firefox

  1. Type this in Firefox's address bar: about:config (You'll get a warning that you're about to edit the advanced properties of Firefox)
  2. Search for: touch
  3. It should call up an option called "dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled"
  4. Double-click and change the integer to 0.
  5. Restart Firefox.

Reordering boxes should work now, though it can turn touchscreen support off altogether for Chrome or Firefox.

When you're done editing your guides, you can either leave this setting disabled or use the same process to re-enable touchscreen support.

Hopefully, Firefox and/or Chrome folks will be able to fix that bug sooner rather than later, but in the meantime, at least you now know how to work around it.
