New Student Military Benefit Checklist
Before you can use your military education benefits, the Office of Military Services, may be required to certify your enrollment with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If you are not using VA benefits, but using benefits through another source, you may be required by your branch of service to submit certain documentation to request those funds.
Each benefit type will include a checklist to help you start using your military benefits. Please click on the appropriate benefit type to view the checklist.
Post 9/11: Chapter 33
Before the VA can start paying your tuition and fees, the Office of Military Services will need to report your enrollment to the VA under the certification process. Please follow the steps below to ensure your Post 9/11 is processed and certified.
- Apply for admissions to Walden University.
- Verify that your degree program is approved for Post 9/11 by searching it in the VA’s approved program database WEAMS.
- If applicable apply for the Post 9/11 GI Bill® with VA.
If you have previously used your GI Bill® at another school, please submit a Change of School form with the VA.
- Request your Joint Services Transcripts or ACE Transcripts. If you have questions about how to request your military transcripts, please contact your Enrollment Specialist.
- Apply for financial aid, if appropriate. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information at 1-800-8925-3368.
- If you are a resident of Minnesota, you could be eligible for the Minnesota GI Bill®. Please follow the checklist under Minnesota GI Bill®. Please be advised that your state may not allow you to use your state benefits at Walden University as our Academic Office is in Minnesota. Please review the stipulations under your state benefit programs for more information.
- Apply for our military tuition discount. Please review the checklist under “Military Tuition Discount” or contact your Enrollment Specialist to apply.
- If you plan to use Tuition Assistance, please follow the instructions under the “Federal Tuition Assistance (TA)” section.
- Register for classes. Your Enrollment Specialist will help you through this process.
- After you have registered for classes, please complete our school form call the Request for Certification form.
- If you have a Certificate of Eligibility letter from the VA, please upload to the bottom of the Request for Certification form.
- If you do not have a Certificate of Eligibility, please upload a screen shot of your eBenefits page.
- If you have neither a Certificate of Eligibility or access to eBenefits, please proceed with filling out the Request for Certification form. The VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility letter at a later time and you can email or fax the letter to the Office of Military Services at that time.
- Learn about our Military Leave of Absence policy and Military Leniency process.
- Learn about university resources that are available to you.
Once you have completed steps 1-9, the Request for Certification form will be routed electronically to the Office of Military Services where your enrollment will be certified within 24 business hours. If there’s anything that is missing from your record preventing the submission of your certification to the VA, a Military Specialist will reach out to you. After you have been certified, you will receive a confirmation email.
Please be advised that you need only submit the Request for Certification form one time when you begin your Post 9/11. The Office of Military Services will continue to monitor your registration and certify your enrollment each time you are enrolled.
At any point you no longer wish to use your Post 9/11, at the soonest, please notify the Office of Military Services by emailing military@mail.waldenu.edu.
After the Office of Military Services has certified your enrollment, and before the VA has made a payment, please feel free to contact the VA to find the status of your payment(s). You may call the VA at 1-888-442-4551.
Once the VA has released a tuition and fee payment to Walden University, they will release a book stipend to you and mail you an award letter. Please allow two weeks from the date on the award letter for tuition and fee payment to post to your Walden University account.
Post 9/11 Chapter 33: Transfer of Benefit
Before the VA can start paying your tuition and fees, the Office of Military Services will need to report your enrollment to the VA under the certification process. Please follow the steps below to ensure your Post 9/11 is processed and certified.
- Apply for admissions to Walden University.
- Verify that your degree program is approved for Post 9/11 by searching it in the VA’s approved program database WEAMS.
- Have the service member or veteran check with their military branch if they are eligible to transfer their Post 9/11 benefits to you. For more information on the transfer of benefit process, please visit the VA’s website.
- Once the military member is approved to transfer, please apply with the VA to use the transferred benefits.
- Please note that if you apply with the VA before the transfer of benefit is approved, the VA may deny your claim and you may need to resubmit a new application.
- If you have previously used your GI Bill® at another school, please submit a Change of School form with the VA.
- If you are also a service member or veteran, request your Joint Services Transcripts or ACE Transcripts. If you have questions about how to request your military transcripts, please contact your Enrollment Specialist.

Yellow Ribbon
The Yellow Ribbon programs covers tuition and fees which exceeds the VA annual tuition and fee cap under the Post 9/11 GI Bill®. For eligibility information, please visit Military Benefits and Financial Aid.
There is nothing you need to do to apply to use Yellow Ribbon. The Office of Military Services will monitor your account and when your tuition and fees exceed the annual cap, your certification will be submitted under the Yellow Ribbon program.
Please be sure to email a copy of your Post 9/11 Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to the Office of Military Services so they can determine if you are eligible for Yellow Ribbon. If you do not send in a copy of your COE, there’s no way their office will know if you are eligible which will cause payment delays. Please email the letter to military@mail.waldenu.edu.
At any point you no longer wish to use your Post 9/11 or Yellow Ribbon, at the soonest, please notify the Office of Military Services by emailing military@mail.waldenu.edu.
After the Office of Military Services has certified your enrollment, and before the VA has made a payment, please feel free to contact the VA to find the status of your payment(s). You may call the VA at 1-888-442-4551.
Once the VA has released a Yellow Ribbon payment to Walden University, they will mail you an award letter. Please allow two weeks from the date on the award letter for tuition and fee payment to post to your Walden University account.

Fry Scholarship

If you plan to use Tuition Assistance in addition to you GI Bill® also known as “Top-Up,” you will be using the checklist below.

Please be advised that VA has ended REAP Chapter 1607 effective November 25, 2015. Some will remain eligible for REAP until November 25, 2019, while others are no longer eligible. For more information, please visit the VA’s website or call the VA at 1-888-442-4551.
If you remain eligible for REAP Chapter 1607, before the VA can start paying you a monthly stipend, the Office of Military Services will need to report your enrollment to the VA under the certification process. Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA): Chapter 35
Before the VA can start paying you a monthly stipend, the Office of Military Services will need to report your enrollment to the VA under the certification process. Please follow the steps below to ensure your DEA Chapter 35 is processed and certified.
- Apply for admissions to Walden University.
- Verify that your degree program is approved for DEA Chapter 35 by searching it in the VA’s approved program database WEAMS.
- If applicable apply for the DEA Chapter 35 with VA.
- If you have previously used your GI Bill® at another school, please submit a Change of School form with the VA.
- If you are also a veteran or servicemember, request your Joint Services Transcripts or ACE Transcripts. If you have questions about how to request your military transcripts, please contact your Enrollment Specialist.
- Apply for financial aid, if appropriate. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information at (800)925-3368, option 6.
- Financial aid is a great option when using DEA Chapter 35. Because tuition and fees are due before the start of the term and DEA Chapter 35 is paid monthly 30 days in arrears, you will not receive your DEA payments by the time you start your classes. - Apply for our military tuition discount. Please review the checklist under “Military Tuition Discount” or contact your Enrollment Specialist to apply.
- If you are also a veteran or servicemember, and you plan to use Tuition Assistance, please follow the instructions under the “Federal Tuition Assistance (TA)” section.
- Register for classes. Your Enrollment Specialist will help you through this process.
- After you have registered for classes, please complete our school form call the Request for Certification form.
- If you have a Certificate of Eligibility letter from the VA, please upload to the bottom of the Request for Certification form.
- If you do not have a Certificate of Eligibility, please upload a screen shot of your eBenefits page.
- If you have neither a Certificate of Eligibility or access to eBenefits, please proceed with filling out the Request for Certification form. The VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility letter at a later time and you can email or fax the letter to the Office of Military Services at that time.
- Call the Office of Military Services to provide your vet file number and payee number. These numbers are assigned to you by the VA. If you’re unsure where to find these numbers, please call the VA at 1-888-442-4551. Once you have obtained the numbers, please call the Office of Military Services at 1-800-925-3368 (option 5 and then option 4). Due to the sensitivity of the information being requested, please do not email or fax the numbers to the Office of Military Services.

Once you have completed steps 1-10, the Request for Certification form will be routed electronically to the Office of Military Services where your enrollment will be certified within 24 business hours. If there’s anything that is missing from your record preventing the submission of certification, a Military Specialist will reach out to you. After you have been certified, you will receive a confirmation email.
Please be advised that you need only submit the Request for Certification form one time when you begin your DEA Chapter 35. The Office of Military Services will continue to monitor your registration and certify your enrollment each time you are enrolled.
At any point you no longer wish to use your DEA Chapter 35, at the soonest, please notify the Office of Military Services by emailing military@mail.waldenu.edu.
After the Office of Military Services has certified your enrollment, and before the VA has made a payment, please feel free to contact the VA to find the status of your payment(s). You may call the VA at 1-888-442-4551.
Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E): Chapter 31
Before the VA can start paying your tuition and fees the Office of Military Services will need to report your enrollment to the VA under the certification process. Please follow the steps below to ensure your Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Chapter 31 also known as Voc Rehab benefit is processed and certified.
- Apply for admissions to Walden University.
- Verify that your degree program is approved for Voc Rehab by searching it in the VA’s approved program database WEAMS.
- If applicable apply for Voc Rehab with VA.
- Request your Joint Services Transcripts or ACE Transcripts. If you have questions about how to request your military transcripts, please contact your Enrollment Specialist.
- Apply for financial aid, if appropriate. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information at 1-800-8925-3368.
- Because Voc Rehab covers all of your tuition and fees, you may not need financial aid. However, the option is available should you need additional financial help.
