SOC-OFE Masters Students: Required Documents

Professional Liability Insurance

You must obtain professional liability insurance prior to beginning practicum, with coverage limits of at least $1 million per incident and $3 million aggregate. You must obtain your own liability insurance policy, even if you are covered by your site's insurance policy.

You are required to be insured from the beginning of practicum through the end of internship. If the insurance certificate that you submit with your application expires during the field experience, you will need to send a new insurance certificate to the SOCHS-OFE.

How to obtain professional liability insurance:

You must obtain appropriate student malpractice insurance; however, you are not required to secure it from either of the aforementioned agencies.

Students in the MS in School Counseling program are encouraged to join the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) for your professional development. The liability insurance include with ASCA student membership does not, however, meet Walden's requirements for professional liability insurance. You will need to ensure additional supplemental insurance or find another insurance provider to meet the coverage requirements.

International Students

You must attempt to obtain the required professional liability insurance for field experience. If insurance is not available or is cost-prohibitive in your location, you may request a waiver from the Office of Applied Learning Agreements.

To request a professional liability insurance waiver, submit the Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) Waiver Form.

  • The form must be completed in its entirety
  • The SOCHS-OFE will submit the PLI Waiver form to the Office of Applied Learning Agreements for a decision
  • The SOCHS-OFE is not involved in this decision, but we will communicate the decision of the Office of Applied Learning Agreements to you when we receive it.
  • Submission of the PLI Waiver form does not guarantee approval.
