Networking (OLD): Offline Networking

Offline Networking

What is an informational meeting?

An informational meeting is an informal meeting with a professional in an area of your career interest. It is a great way to gain more in-depth knowledge about a potential employer, opportunity, or field.  Although this type of meeting often leads to job opportunities, avoid asking for a job at an informational meeting.

After you identify an organization or individual, reach out via phone, e-mail, or LinkedIn and introduce yourself. Ask for a 30-minute meeting to discuss their career field and/or organization, meeting at their office when possible to get a feel for the environment.

It is your job to lead this meeting, so be prepared with topics and questions.  After you introduce yourself, consider asking these questions:

  • What is a typical day on the job?
  • What is your background/career path?
  • What is the management style/culture of the organization?
  • Is there room for upward mobility?
  • What are the main challenges you see in this career field?
  • What professional associations would you recommend I join?
  • Are there any websites or publications you reference to stay on top of trends in the field?
  • Can you recommend any other professionals in the field for me to meet?

In concluding your meeting, follow up with a thank-you letter or e-mail and consider including an interesting article or website related to your contact's professional or personal interests; remember that networking is the art of building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships.

How can I maximize membership in professional associations to build my network?

Once you join a professional association in your field, jump right in and grow your network.  We recommend that you become active in your association by attending or presenting at events (e.g., conferences, networking socials, round tables), submitting articles for publication in a newsletter, or even volunteering on the board or a subcommittee.

How can volunteering strengthen my network?

Volunteering in your community is a great way to give back, and it can also help strengthen your network.  To find a volunteer site, search nonprofit and volunteerism websites, reach out to a local charity, or connect with an organization or company for whom you are interested in working.  For those in remote areas, virtual volunteer opportunities are available.

Once you obtain a volunteer opportunity, take initiative and ask to take on more projects.  This will allow you to enhance your skill set and meet more people.  In doing so, you will become connected within the organization, learn insider job information, and obtain references.

What are 10 tips for networking at professional gatherings?

  1. Set goals.  Prior to attending an event, know who you want to meet and what information you want to gain.
  2. Have a professional online image.  People may be reviewing your online credentials before or after these gatherings.  Make sure your online presence (e.g., LinkedIn, Twitter, Blog, Facebook) represents you as a professional.
  3. Practice your elevator pitch.  Know how you will present yourself to others.  How will you make them interested to know more about you?
  4. Stay positive.  Whether you are seeking a new job, trying to identify new clients, or just networking to meet new people, keep the tone of your communication positive.
  5. Know who will attend.  Obtain a list of attendees and research the backgrounds of those you are most interested in meeting.  This will provide you with ice breaker conversation.
  6. Research trends and upcoming events.  Become knowledgeable on what is happening in your field to enhance discussions with others.
  7. Appearance.  Reflect on your personal image and what is appropriate for the event.
  8. Add value.  Networking is about building mutually beneficial relationships.  Decide how you will add value to your new connections.
  9. Work the room.  Make yourself visible and approachable.
  10. Contact information.  Obtain contact information via business cards or through an electronic exchange with your new contacts so you can stay in touch.
