Important Notes (please read):

  • A separate application must be completed and approved for every quarter of enrollment in field experience (including Practicum, Internship I, and Internship II, as well as Practicum and Internship Extensions, if needed).
  • PhD-CES students who need to complete master's level field experiences should adhere to the requirements and application process for the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.

Doctoral Internship Application Process Overview

1. Create Individual Internship Plan

  • Review internship requirements on Individual Internship Plan and secure field experience opportunities to secure opportunities in at least three (3) domains.
  • Work with Walden faculty for support and advice
    • Starting in Summer 2021, students will work on their Individual Internship Plan in the Doctoral Practicum course.
  • Finalize plan with secured field site(s)

2. Prepare doctoral internship application materials for submission in Meditrek

  • Individual Internship Plan
  • Internship Learning Agreements: One for each non-Walden field site at which you plan to obtain hours
    • Learning Agreements are not required for Walden In-House Experiences
  • Student Professional Liability Insurance Certificate

For Counseling Domain ONLY:

  • Clinical Supervision Contract
  • Clinical Supervisor Resume/CV

3. Submit Application

  • Submit your complete application in Meditrek within the published Application Submission Window.
    • Your Internship Learning Agreements, Clinical Supervision Contract (if applicable), and Clinical Supervisor Resume/CV (if applicable) need to be submitted in a zipped file in the Doctoral Internship Supplements checklist item on your Meditrek application.

4. SOC-OFE Review of Application

  • Program faculty will review your Individual Internship Plan to determine the fit of your proposed field experience with program requirements.
    • You may be asked for additional information and/or revisions, so it is imperative that you monitor your Walden email closely.
  • The SOC-OFE operations coordinator will determine if Walden University has a current Affiliation Agreement with your proposed field site(s) and will contact your field site to establish a new agreement, if needed.
  • The SOC-OFE operations coordinator will perform an Eligibility Audit to ensure that the prerequisite requirements for the field experience have been met.
  • You will receive final approval decision via Walden email.

Required Documents - Doctoral Internship

For COUNSELING domain experiences ONLY:

Professional Liability Insurance

You must obtain professional liability insurance prior to beginning practicum, with coverage limits of at least $1 million per incident and $3 million aggregate. You must obtain your own liability insurance policy, even if you are covered by your site's insurance policy.

You are required to be insured from the beginning of practicum through the end of internship. If the insurance certificate that you submit with your application expires during the field experience, you will need to send a new insurance certificate to the SOC-OFE.

How to obtain professional liability insurance:

You must obtain appropriate student malpractice insurance; however, you are not required to secure it from either of the aforementioned agencies.

International Students

You must attempt to obtain the required professional liability insurance for field experience. If insurance is not available or is cost-prohibitive in your location, you may request a waiver from the Office of Applied Learning Agreements.

To request a professional liability insurance waiver, submit the Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) Waiver Form.

  • The form must be completed in its entirety
  • The SOCHP-OFE will submit the PLI Waiver form to the Office of Applied Learning Agreements for a decision
  • The SOCHP-OFE is not involved in this decision, but we will communicate the decision of the Office of Applied Learning Agreements to you when we receive it.
  • Submission of the PLI Waiver form does not guarantee approval.
