RSCH 8300 Week 10 Discussion 2: Week 10 Discussion 2

Introduction

In Week 10 Discussion 2 you are asked to search for information related to protecting privacy, minimizing harm, or respecting the shared experience of others.

This guide will help you to:

  • Conduct a search in SAGE Research Methods Online or the library databases to find items about protecting privacy, minimizing harm, or respecting the shared experience of others.

SAGE Research Methods Online search tips

Please refer to the SAGE Research Methods Online tutorial to learn how to access and search in SAGE Research Methods Online.

When using SAGE Research Methods Online keep in mind that your searches will be much broader here than the searches you do when searching for research articles. In SAGE Research Methods Online you will want to keep your searches to one word or a brief phrase. For example, search research ethics rather than "respecting the shared experience of others." Issues of protecting privacy, minimizing harm, or respecting the shared experience of others can collectively be thought of as research ethics.

Article search tips

For this discussion you can use Thoreau just as in Week 10, Discussion 1 since issues of protecting privacy, minimizing harm, or respecting the shared experience of others are general concepts that will be the same across multiple areas of study.

You can do a general search by just putting research ethics in the first search box. Since this may get too many results to sort through you may want to add other terms. For example, if you want to search for information focused on privacy you might try the following:

First Search Box: research ethics

Second Search Box: privacy OR confidentiality.

Note: The word OR allows you to search either term. This is helpful when you want to search terms that are similar. You can learn more about this in our Boolean Operator guide.

Note: "Minimizing harm" and "respecting the shared experience of others" are difficult concepts to search; research ethics will find articles that address these concepts in a more general way.
