How to Receive and Return Additional Assignment Attempts as a Faculty

Students are automatically given two attempts to submit work on some assignments. If a student would like to request an additional attempt, students will reach out to their faculty with this request.  Faculty should use your program, college, and university guidelines to identify if the student meets the requirements to allow an additional attempt.

The process for an additional attempt is the following:

  • The student asks for an additional attempt

  • Faculty determines that they are allowed an additional attempt

  • Faculty Notifies the student that they can submit the additional attempt and provides this link to the guide below

  • Student submits the additional attempt

  • The student notifies the Faculty of the submission

  • Faculty downloads the attempt

  • Faculty grades the attempt and runs it through the Turnitin Similarity Website (if applicable)

  • Faculty uploads the graded attempt in the comments area and changes grade in SpeedGrader, then notifies the student

Grading an additional attempt submitted in the comments is a little different. You still will need to navigate to the SpeedGrader area of that specific assignment and student. Then it will look something like this:

Speedgrader area with callouts on the third submission that was submitted in the comments area, the faculty commenting area, the attach file icon, and the submit button.

  1. Student Comment and Submission: Here is where you will find and download a student attempt in the comments area.
  2. Comment Area: Type here to leave a comment.
  3. Attach File Icon: Click this button and follow the prompts to attach the graded version of the student submission.
  4. Submit Button: Click Submit after you have added a comment and attachment.
