Writing Resources for HMNT 3001C: Week 1

Week 1: Cite an Academic Quote

Welcome to Week 1 of HMNT 3001C! Weekly coursework consists of discussion posts and assignments. To get started, review what makes a successful discussion post in the Writing Center’s recorded webinar, "Writing and Responding to Discussion Posts".

For this week’s Project Milestone assignment, you must choose a social issue, explain why you have chosen it, and find two academic quotes relevant to that issue. A quote is phrasing taken directly from a source and used in your own writing.

You should use APA style to give credit to the original author of the quoted material. There are two different ways to cite sources in APA style:

  • Narrative citation: Jackson and Lomax (2015) stated that “despite progress in the 1990s and early 2000s, violence—especially mass violence—remains a major American problem” (p. 21).
  • Parenthetical citation: “Despite progress in the 1990s and early 2000s, violence—especially mass violence—remains a major American problem” (Jackson & Lomax, 2015, p. 21).

Note that when citing a direct quotation you need three pieces of information: the author, the publication year, and the page number. If you are citing an online source without page numbers (like a trusted website), use the paragraph number instead. See the Writing Center’s Citations page for more examples and explanation.
