Delivery Format

Current Residency Model New Social Work Skills Lab Model
Residencies 1 and 2 are separate/stand-alone, 4-day, face-to-face experiences.

Social Work Skills Labs are 6-week hybrid courses that include a 4-day, face-to-face residential component.

Fees

Current Residency Model New Social Work Skills Lab Model
$1,450 fee per residency, NOT INCLUDED in program tuition. $1,450 fee per Social Work Skills Lab, INCLUDED in program tuition.

 

Financial Aid

Current Residency Model New Social Work Skills Lab Model

Residency fees ($1,450 each), as well as associated travel and lodging expenses, ARE NOT included in your program tuition and are billed separately.

Residency fees ARE NOT eligible to be paid with your Financial Aid.

Associated travel and lodging expenses are not included in your program tuition and must be paid out of pocket.

For students who are eligible for a Financial Aid refund, you may use it to pay your residency fee and travel costs such as airfare, lodging, meals, etc.

Social Work Skills Lab fees ($1,450 each) ARE ELIGIBLE to be covered by Financial Aid for eligible students who are enrolled at least halftime (3 credit hours) since they are billed as part of your program tuition.

Associated travel and lodging expenses are not included in your program tuition and must be paid out of pocket.

For students who are eligible for a Financial Aid refund, you may use it to pay your travel costs such as airfare, lodging, meals, etc.

Note: Currently, Financial aid limits borrowing to $6833 per term. In terms where you take SWLB 0651 Social Work Skills Lab 1 or SWLB 0652 Social Work Skills Lab II, you may want to take only one other 5‐credit course to remain within the borrowing limit.

Focus of Content

Current Residency Model New Social Work Skills Lab Model
Skill preparation, mentoring with faculty, and preparation for field experiences. Improved content, knowledge and skill preparation, mentoring with faculty, and enhanced preparation for field experiences through greater integration with online course content.

 

Registration Process

Current Residency Model New Social Work Skills Lab Model
Register for your Residencies using your myWalden portal or by contacting Student Success Advising. You will be registered for your Social Work Skills Labs by the University at pre-determined points in the program.

 

Required Timing

You register for residencies using your myWalden portal or by contacting Student Success Advising.

Residency 1

  • Complete Residency 1 (RESI 6651) face-to-face after you have completed SOCW 6002 and SOCW 6101.
  • Required before you can enter SOCW 6500 Social Work Field Education I.

Residency 2

  • Complete Residency 2 (RESI 6652) face-to-face after SOCW 6510.
  • Required before enrolling in SOCW 6520 Social Work Field Education III.

Advanced Standing Students

  • Skip Residency 1.
  • Complete Residency 2 (RESI 6652A) face-to-face after SOCW 6000.

You will be registered by the University as follows:

SWLB 0651 Social Work Skills Lab I - 1cr (SWSL I) after you have completed SOCW 6002 and SOCW 6101.

  • This lab includes online course content integrated with a 4-day, face-to-face residential requirement.
    • 3 weeks online
    • 4 days face-to-face
    • 2 weeks online
  • Successful completion is required before SOCW 6500 Social Work Field Education I.

SWLB 0652 Social Work Skills Lab II - 1cr (SWSL II) after SOCW 6510 and prior to enrolling in SOCW 6520 Social Work Field Education III.

  • This lab includes online course content integrated with a 4-day, face-to-face residential requirement.
    • 3 weeks online
    • 4 days face-to-face
    • 2 weeks online
  • Successful completion is required before SOCW 6520 Social Work Field Education III.

Advanced Standing Students

  • Skip Social Work Skills Lab I.
  • Attend Social Work Skills Lab II after completing SOCW 6000. You will be registered by the University for SWLB 0652A Social Work Skills Lab IIA.

Field Experience Application Process

  • If you select the new Social Work Skills Lab model, you will complete the Field Experience application during the Social Work Skills Lab course.
  • If you opt to stay in the current residency model, you’ll complete the Field Experience application with the Office of Field Experience on your own. (Meditrek login credentials were sent from mswfield@mail.waldenu.edu the first quarter of your enrollment; subject, “Walden University School of Social Work and Human Services: Your Meditrek account information.”) Refer to the Office of Field Experience website for more information.
