The School of Counseling has the following Masters programs:

Is there an order in which I should be taking my courses? Can I make any changes to that order?

You will follow the course sequence outlined in your Degree Audit.

Your program is designed in a certain sequence, but you can email Student Success Advising to request changes to your schedule. Please know that many courses have prerequisites associated with them, so a petition to alter sequence may not be approved.

How many classes do I take each quarter?

You are automatically registered to take two courses per quarter. If you wish to take only one course in a quarter you may. Please email our Student Success Advisor for assistance in dropping the second course.

Note: Please contact Financial Aid (finaid@mail.waldenu.edu) for any questions related to how adjusting your course load in a quarter may impact your aid award that term.

Do I find my own practicum or internship site?

You will locate your own practicum or internship site. If you have questions about your site, please visit the Field Training website for more information.

Advising recommends students begin searching for their sites after they complete Pre-Practicum Lab.

What is the deadline for submitting my practicum or internship application?

Students should finalize their sites at least 6 months prior to the term start. For more information about specific deadlines please visit the Field Experience website.

Who can I talk to about licensing questions related to my program?

Please review your state licensing board’s information or email counlicensure@mail.waldenu.edu for more information.

How long are my classes?

Your foundations course and pre-practicum lab are six weeks in length, but all other courses are 11 weeks.

Can I change my specialization?

You are able to change your specialization by contacting your Student Success Advisor. Student Success Advising recommends changing your specialization prior to starting your specialization courses as some courses may not transfer between specializations.

Please note: If you are changing from the General Specialization to another specialization you will be adding additional two courses to your program of study.

Please contact Financial Aid (finaid@waldenu.edu) for any questions regarding the additional courses and your aid eligibility.

Do I need to initiate registration for my courses?

You will be automatically registered for your courses each quarter by our Registrar’s Office provided you do not have any holds on your account that may prevent registration.

The only exceptions to the automatic registration process are for practicum, internship, pre-practicum lab, and specialization courses. You will need to initiate registration for these. Please contact your Student Success Advisor for more information.

If you are not registered at least 3 weeks prior to the next quarter start, and you do not have a hold on your account, please contact Student Success Advising for assistance in getting registered.

My Degree Audit says a class is “Unavailable” – what does that mean?

When a Degree Audit says that a course is unavailable it means that course is currently not available for online registration. It does not necessarily mean that registration for that course is not possible. If a course shows as unavailable in your Degree Audit please send a written request to your Student Success Advisor who can verify the availability of the course and process your request if the course is available.

Can I work when I’m completing my practicum or internship?

You are able to continue working but please know that the internship and practicum will be similar to having an additional job in terms of hours each week.

Do I need to purchase my own books?

You will need to purchase your own course materials each term and can do so using the View Course Materials link located beneath each of your courses on the homepage your myWalden portal after you are registered.

Your courses will be 11 or 12 weeks in length. If you have any questions about the length of your course, please refer to the dates listed in your classroom.

Can I change my specialization?

  • If you are in the General program, you can request to change to the Counseling specialization. Please know that if you change to the Counseling Specialization you will be adding an additional 35 credits to your total credits required for degree completion.
  • If you are in the Counseling specialization and wish to change to the General program, you may do so.

What is the blended course option?

Two courses in your program are available in a hybrid platform. These courses – which include an online course with an in-person component - are an option for the second quarter in your program. You will have to travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to complete the in-person component. Please contact your Student Success Advisor for more information about the blended course option.

If I am interested in starting the Ph.D. I/O Psychology after my MS, do I have any special options?

If you are planning on starting a Ph.D. in I/O psychology after you complete your MS, you may be able to substitute a Ph.D.-transferrable course for your MS-level capstone. Please contact your Student Success Advisor if you have any questions about this option for completing your MS in I/O.

Public Policy and Administration Programs

The School of Public Policy and Administration has the following Masters programs:

Is there an order in which I should be taking my courses? Can I make any changes to that order?

There is a recommended sequence for a student’s program, and this is published in the catalog and Degree Audit. However, students can request permission to take courses out of order. You can contact your Student Success Advisor to inquire about your options as program director approval may be required for some sequence alterations. Please know that some courses have prerequisites associated with them, so requests to alter sequence may not be approved.

How many courses do I take each quarter?

The program was designed to be taken two courses per quarter, but if you would like to alter your registration to take more or fewer courses, please schedule an appointment to speak with Student Success Advising about your options. If you wish to take 3 courses per quarter, you will need to petition for program director approval, and approval may be based upon prior performance in the program.

If you are using financial aid to pay for your program, please contact the Financial Aid (finaid@mail.waldenu.edu) to learn about how adjusting your course load for a term will impact your aid eligibility.

How long are my courses?

Your Foundation course will be 6 weeks in length, but all other courses in your program are 11 weeks in length. Please review the Current or Future Courses section of your myWalden portal as course length will be indicated there for each course.

How long will my program take me to complete?

Program completion will vary from student to student, due to specialization options, transfer of credit awarded at admission, or individual progress, to name only a few individual factors. Please review your Degree Audit for more information related to the courses you have left in your degree, and contact your Student Success Advisor if you have any questions about your progress.

Can I change my specialization or add a second one?

You are able to change your concentration or add an additional concentration. Student Success Advising recommends that a student make changes to their concentration prior to taking any concentration courses as concentration courses may not transfer between concentrations.  Please schedule an appointment with your Student Success Advisor to discuss options for a concentration change.

Adding or changing a concentration may lengthen the time before you are able to complete your program. Please contact Financial Aid with any questions you might have related to the length of your program and your aid eligibility.

How many classes do I take each quarter?

Your course load will vary depending on which track you are in for your program:

  • Part-time—This track is similar to most traditional master’s-level programs in which students either complete one or two courses per quarter.
  • Two-year, full time—This track requires students to complete two courses in the first quarter while completing three courses in many of the remaining quarters.
  • Advanced Standing—This track is for students who enter the program with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Students in this track will begin the program with the introductory course that all MSW students take but then move to the advanced-level courses.

Do I need to locate my own field experience location?

Yes, you will arrange your own field experience. Please contact the Field Experience team for further information.

What is the skills lab requirement?

Students are required to complete two Skills Labs. The labs include online course content integrated with a 4-day, face-to-face residential requirement.
