- MS in School Counseling
Is there an order in which I should be taking my courses? Can I make any changes to that order?
You will follow the course sequence outlined in your Degree Audit.
Your program is designed in a certain sequence, but you can email Student Success Advising to request changes to your schedule. Please know that many courses have prerequisites associated with them, so a petition to alter sequence may not be approved.
How many classes do I take each quarter?
You are automatically registered to take two courses per quarter. If you wish to take only one course in a quarter you may. Please email our Student Success Advisor for assistance in dropping the second course.
Note: Please contact Financial Aid (finaid@mail.waldenu.edu) for any questions related to how adjusting your course load in a quarter may impact your aid award that term.
Do I find my own practicum or internship site?
You will locate your own practicum or internship site. If you have questions about your site, please visit the Field Training website for more information.
Advising recommends students begin searching for their sites after they complete Pre-Practicum Lab.
What is the deadline for submitting my practicum or internship application?
Students should finalize their sites at least 6 months prior to the term start. For more information about specific deadlines please visit the Field Experience website.
Who can I talk to about licensing questions related to my program?
Please review your state licensing board’s information or email counlicensure@mail.waldenu.edu for more information.
Another resource you may find helpful is the National Counselor Examination For Licensure and Certification’s website.
How long are my classes?
Your foundations course and pre-practicum lab are six weeks in length, but all other courses are 11 weeks.
Can I change my specialization?
You are able to change your specialization by contacting your Student Success Advisor. Student Success Advising recommends changing your specialization prior to starting your specialization courses as some courses may not transfer between specializations.
Please note: If you are changing from the General Specialization to another specialization you will be adding additional two courses to your program of study.
Please contact Financial Aid (finaid@waldenu.edu) for any questions regarding the additional courses and your aid eligibility.
Do I need to initiate registration for my courses?
You will be automatically registered for your courses each quarter by our Registrar’s Office provided you do not have any holds on your account that may prevent registration.
The only exceptions to the automatic registration process are for practicum, internship, pre-practicum lab, and specialization courses. You will need to initiate registration for these. Please contact your Student Success Advisor for more information.
If you are not registered at least 3 weeks prior to the next quarter start, and you do not have a hold on your account, please contact Student Success Advising for assistance in getting registered.
My Degree Audit says a class is “Unavailable” – what does that mean?
When a Degree Audit says that a course is unavailable it means that course is currently not available for online registration. It does not necessarily mean that registration for that course is not possible. If a course shows as unavailable in your Degree Audit please send a written request to your Student Success Advisor who can verify the availability of the course and process your request if the course is available.
Can I work when I’m completing my practicum or internship?
You are able to continue working but please know that the internship and practicum will be similar to having an additional job in terms of hours each week.
Do I need to purchase my own books?
You will need to purchase your own course materials each term and can do so using the View Course Materials link located beneath each of your courses on the homepage your myWalden portal after you are registered.
