Tailoring Your Curriculum Vitae: When is a c.v. appropriate?

When is a c.v. appropriate?

A c.v. is appropriate for:

  • Applications for positions in academia, including: school administration, institutional research and consulting, and higher education positions in teaching, research and administration
  • Applications for graduate or professional schools
  • Independent consulting opportunities
  • Proposals for fellowships or grants.  When compiling a vitae for employment purposes, highlight your strengths and tailor your c.v. to the positions for which you are applying. Since academic institutions vary in their missions and objectives, you may need to arrange the information on your vitae differently for different audiences. You may want to list your publications, presentations, and awards first when applying to research institutions and list your teaching experience first when applying to teaching positions at community colleges.
